If Netflix and Disney Plus are the big dogs of the streaming world, Paramount Plus is the terrier yapping at their heels.   As of February 16, the burgeoning streamer’s parent company, ViacomCBS, is re-branding to Paramount Global (or, more simply, Paramount) in an effort to generate more name recognition for the company’s centerpiece entertainment studio.  The announcement comes alongside a commitment to investing more than $6 billion in new streaming content over the next two years, with Paramount hoping its still-young streaming service will have surpassed 100 million subscribers by 2024.  Those numbers might seem like small change compared to Paramount Plus’ larger (and older) competitors – Netflix splashed $17 billion on programming last year, while Disney is targeting around 250 million subscribers for Disney Plus come the end of 2024 – but they are nonetheless a sign that Paramount has designs on disrupting the streaming market sooner rather than later.  ...

Square Enix’s upcoming online action RPG Babylon’s Fall will be the next console exclusive to hit PlayStation, and it's getting a free demo on February 25 in the run-up to the game’s launch. Available on PS5 and PS4, the demo will allow you to explore the game’s opening area through multiple hours of story content, letting you get to grips with its basics and the many character types on offer.  You’ll be able to dig into the game solo or team up with three pals in four-player co-op. Plus, all saved data made during the trial (including progress and achievements) can be transferred to the full game after it launches, giving you a bit of a head start if you decide to pick it up Square Enix has also said anyone who signs into the game during its first season of content will automatically be given the game’s Premium Battle Pass for free.   If you’ve been trying – and failing – to buy a new graphics card recently, then the good news is that the nightmare might be finally over, with stock of AMD and Nvidia GPUs seemingly much more plentiful so far in 2022 – and that’s helped lower prices as well. The stock situation looks particularly good with European retailers, who are getting more units in, which should hopefully make buying the GPUs easier.  The gaming and movie rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are going up for sale, leaving investors in Hollywood and beyond ready to scoop up one of the biggest-ever literary and media franchises.  As reported by Variety, film production company Saul Zaentz Co. is auctioning off an array of gaming, movie, merchandising, live event, and theme park rights to various works of J.R.R. Tolkien.  The holdings are projected to fetch close to $2 billion, with Amazon expected to be among those first in line to acquire them.
